8 Reasons Why you Need to Reprogram Your Aircon Unit’s Thermostat

Your aircon unit’s thermostat is important when it comes to maintaining your heating and cooling unit’s optimal performance. If you have the wrong thermostat installed in your aircon unit, then you are sure to pay the price for lost energy efficiency, uncomfortable temperatures, or fluctuating room conditions. But did you also know that you need to reprogram your thermostat whether it is at home or your workplace? If you are unsure about how to do it, you can always consult a professional air conditioner installation company in Singapore for advice.

Let’s take a look at why you need to do it:

1) Your aircon unit’s thermostat controls the temperature of your entire home, but it doesn’t know how warm you are.

The aircon unit’s thermostat is a pre-programmed device that will turn your aircon on and off at specific times. Colder or warmer, it doesn’t care. You don’t have to be freezing cold during hot summer days or even on rainy days, you can reprogram the settings so that the aircon unit turns on and off less often.

2) Your aircon unit is removing water from the inside of your home.

This is one reason why it’s so common to get mold issues in Singapore, not just because there are tiny mold spores everywhere, but because mold can grow on the cold, moist surfaces created by using your aircon unit. The way your aircon unit works is to suck in outside air and blow it through a cold coil that picks up water vapor from the warm indoor air. This creates cold, wet conditions in which mold thrives.

3) Your aircon unit doesn’t actually make you feel that much cooler.

The aircon unit makes you feel colder by dropping the temperature of your skin, so it feels as if you’ve cooled down. The actual temperature of the room doesn’t affect how cool we feel though, it’s all about our perception, so if your apartment or home was 20 degrees and you turned on your aircon unit, you would feel about the same as if it was 30 degrees and you turned on your aircon unit.

The difference is that you used less electricity to make yourself feel cold in the second case because your skin temperature dropped from 30 degrees to 20 degrees, but your room still feels warm.

4) You can save a lot of money by reprogramming your aircon unit.

If you use a lot of electricity, switching to energy-saving mode could save up to 50% on your bill. In most countries, aircon unit makes up around 20-30% of residential electricity usage so you can see how much this would save. You can also set the thermostat so the aircon turns on and off less frequently, saving even more money.

5) You can save a lot of time by reprogramming your aircon unit.

If you use the fan setting instead of auto mode, you probably turn your aircon unit on maybe 3 times per day about 30 minutes each time. This is much quicker than waiting for it to cool down for, say, 3 hours each time. You can set it to turn on at the times you want to be cooled in the morning, coming home from work, and bedtime.

6) Your home doesn’t get as dry by using a fan instead of an aircon unit.

When you use an aircon unit, your skin evaporates water which isn’t replaced by the aircon unit, which means your skin becomes dry. This is why it’s important to keep drinking water when you’re at home during summer. When you use the fan, though, the air is constantly moving so your skin is constantly getting wetted with humidity from outside, allowing it to stay at a nice moisture level.

7) Your aircon unit can be hacked!

The most aircon unit is controlled by radio signals that are sent from the remote control. This means you don’t have to actually physically touch the aircon to turn it on or off instead, you could potentially hack into your aircon unit’s signal and turn it on or off at will. Yes, you read right, someone could hack into your aircon unit and turn it on and off whenever they like.

8) Your aircon unit works like a fridge in reverse.

If you think about how a fridge keeps things cool, there are two processes at work, the compressor is compressing gas to make it cold, while the condenser releases heat outside to keep things cold.

The aircon unit works in the opposite way, it takes cold gas and makes it hot while releasing hot air outside to keep things cool. Instead of making something colder than its surroundings like a fridge, an aircon unit makes something warmer than its surroundings and that’s the inside of your home.
