7 Troubleshooting Tips to Save your Aircon Unit Money

Troubleshooting an aircon unit is often the expertise of the professionals. This is because they’re complex machines that can often be dangerous to repair without the correct knowledge and equipment. However, there are a few simple checks most homeowners can carry out themselves with no risk and little cost if done carefully and methodically:

1) Clean dirty filters.

Dirty filters are the most common reason for poor circulation in an aircon system. Fortunately, it’s the easiest problem to fix. In some aircon units, it’s as simple as sliding out the old filter and popping in a new one. In other aircon units, however, you’ll have to unscrew or unclip the front grille to access it.

2) Thoroughly inspect and clean the unit.

The aircon system cools by transferring the heat it absorbs from inside your building to outside through a compressor. However, this process creates condensation. That’s why you’ll find pools of water underneath outdoor aircon during hot and humid days. They can evaporate quickly or be blown away by strong gusts of wind.

Pro 338 Tip: To prevent rusting and pruning, drain excess water regularly. If that’s not possible then having a technician come out every six months is recommended. This is especially important in humid climates because excessive amounts of moisture are bad for the unit. It will lead to corrosion which means leaks later on and at worst, pruning and rusting of the metal base plate. If you can’t drain the water yourself ask your aircon technician to do this for you at least twice a year.

3) Check all electrical connections.

No matter what type of ac system you have it’s always best to use an ac wiring inspection service. The reason is that even if your unit is old and has seen better days, there can still be small flaws in the wiring that result in power fluctuations. When power fluctuates it makes moving parts like capacitors and fans work improperly, which leads to reduced airflow and inefficient cooling.

Pro 338 Tip: To save yourself money make sure all electrical connections have been inspected.

4) Check for leaks.

When the unit is running the condenser coil must be cool enough to dissipate heat into the air outside your building. If there’s no way out then pressure builds up in the A/C system which means there are leaks. It can occur at any point between joints or valves in an aircon system but they’re common around outdoor units (condensers) where rubber hoses attach to the coil.

Pro 338 Tip: Check all connections around the condenser and make sure none of them are dripping or leaking. If they are then, you’ll need to tighten the bolts holding them in place or ask a certified ac technician to do it for you. You could also have someone come out every six months so he can tighten everything up before leaks become a real problem.

5) Make sure your unit is getting enough airflow to the condenser.

The coil on the outside of your aircon unit attracts hot air from indoors and pushes it out through cooling fins, which in turn helps to cool down a room. If the fins are clogged with dust or other debris then there will be a reduction in airflow and consequently less efficient cooling.

6) Clean the inside coils too.

The condenser coils are the coils on the outside of your aircon unit. They attract hot air from indoors and then cool it down before pushing it outdoors through the cooling fins. They can get clogged with dust or other debris which will affect their efficiency in cooling.

7) Make sure your insulation is done well.

There’s a seal where your aircon unit sits in a window frame which will prevent hot/cold air from leaking into or out of an air-conditioned room. The problem with this seal is that it does not form a perfect barrier and will allow some airflow either way.

It’s always a good time to talk about the common issues that aircon units have.
